DM556 — 2-Phase Digital Stepper Driver

The DM556 is a two-phase digital stepper driver built around servo-like control principles, combining vector control, built-in microstepping, and adaptive filtering to smooth out motor performance across low, medium, and high speeds while keeping noise down. Its pure sine-wave current vector control reduces motor heating, and its operating range — DC24–50V input, up to 5.6A peak current — is sized for 42mm to 86mm-frame two-phase hybrid stepper motors, a wider power range than the DM422.

Control Signal Interface

PinFunction
PUL+ / PUL-Pulse input. Drivable at +5V to +24V, active on rising edge — the motor advances one microstep on each falling edge of the pulse. Pulse width should exceed 2μs for reliable response.
DIR+ / DIR-Direction input. Drivable at +5V to +24V, high/low level signal. The direction signal should be established at least 5μs before the pulse signal to guarantee reliable direction changes. Initial rotation direction depends on motor wiring; swapping either phase winding (e.g., A+/A-) reverses it.
ENA+ / ENA-Enable input. Drivable at +5V to +24V, high/low level signal. Pulling ENA+ to +5V and ENA- low cuts current to all motor phases, putting the motor in a free (unpowered) state and ignoring step pulses. Leave the enable input floating when this function isn't needed.

Status Indicators

A green LED indicates power status — lit continuously when the driver is powered, off when power is cut. A red LED indicates faults, blinking in a repeating 3-second cycle when a fault is active and going dark once the fault clears. The number of blinks within each 3-second cycle identifies the fault:

Blink CountFault
2Overvoltage (voltage > DC50V)
3Undervoltage (voltage < DC20V)
5Motor open circuit (phase loss)

Both common-cathode and common-anode control signal wiring configurations are supported.

Typical Applications

Sized for 42mm to 86mm two-phase hybrid stepper motors up to 5.6A peak current, the DM556 fits industrial CNC axes, packaging and labeling machinery, textile and printing equipment, and other mid-to-heavy-duty pulse/direction-controlled positioning tasks where smooth, low-noise operation and reduced motor heating matter.

Why Choose the DM556

The 32-bit DSP core with vector control and pure sine-wave current drive keeps the motor running smoothly across its full speed range while cutting the heat buildup that plain constant-current drivers produce, and built-in microstepping and adaptive filtering reduce resonance-related noise and vibration without external tuning. Opto-isolated differential inputs protect the control electronics from motor-side noise, and automatic idle-current reduction cuts motor heating and power draw whenever the axis is stationary. Compared with the DM422, the DM556's wider voltage range (DC24–50V) and higher current capacity (up to 5.6A) let it drive the larger 42mm to 86mm stepper motors used in higher-torque applications. Built-in overvoltage, undervoltage, and open-phase protection, paired with LED fault diagnostics, shortens troubleshooting time in the field.
