Apexwell attended Hannover Messe 2026 in Germany as visitors rather than exhibitors this year, spending three days walking the automation halls to see where motor and motion-control technology is headed. Our biggest takeaway: closed loop feedback and efficiency compliance have moved from "advanced option" to baseline expectation across almost every drive system on the floor.

What caught our attention on the show floor

A few patterns showed up again and again as we moved from booth to booth:

  • Closed loop is the default conversation, not the upsell. Motion-control suppliers we spoke with were leading with encoder feedback and stall detection as a standard feature of new drive lines, not a premium add-on — consistent with what we wrote about in our closed loop stepper motor trend piece earlier this year.

  • AI showed up as condition monitoring, not just software demos. Several drive and PLC vendors demonstrated predictive-maintenance features built directly into motor controllers, using vibration and current signature data to flag bearing wear or winding issues before failure.

  • Motion control names were well represented. Established drive and gear-motor suppliers, including Festo and SEW-EURODRIVE, had a visible presence in the automation halls, reflecting how central motion control remains to the broader industrial-automation story even as software and AI dominate the headlines[4].

  • Wireless connectivity is moving from "nice to have" to expected. The 5G & Industrial Wireless Arena drew steady traffic, and multiple exhibitors framed wireless drive connectivity as a practical tool for retrofits where running new cabling isn't realistic[3].

None of this was a surprise so much as a confirmation. We've been building out closed loop options across our stepper and BLDC lines because customers are asking for exactly the reliability guarantees that were on display at Hannover — stall detection, predictable positioning under variable load, and diagnostic data that a maintenance team can actually act on. Seeing it treated as baseline expectation across an entire industry, not just a request from a handful of customers, is a useful signal for how we prioritize new development.
